Synopsis
The Story Begins Here...
Actor William Hartnell felt trapped by a succession of hard-man roles while wannabe producer Verity Lambert was frustrated by the TV industry's glass ceiling. Both of them were to find unlikely hope and unexpected challenges in the form of a Saturday tea-time drama. Allied with a team of unusual but brilliant people, they went on to create the longest running science fiction series ever made.

"But I told him he was stupid, the TARDIS will go on and on forever cause it's special and magic, like my Sampa, my Sampa's Doctor Who...and he can do anything."
Phenomenally touching, Mark Gatiss' drama into the creation of Doctor Who and it's star is so much more than just a love letter to the show. An Adventure In Space and Time is driven by incredible performances, with one of the best being that of Brian Cox as Sydney Newman...but the gold does truly go to David Bradley as William Hartnell, the first Doctor.
Bradely's portrayal of a typecast old man who finds new life and purpose in a science-fiction series is not only intriguing from start to finish,…

Hold up, they changed the ending toNCUTI GATWA?!
I was hoping we’d get to hear more of him as the Doctor aside from that bit at the end of the initial 60th trailer, but that wink at the end absolutely confirmed to me that he’s going to smash it. As if those shots of him looking at the audience in the trailers didn’t convince any naysayers enough…
Bet you he’ll be in Wild Blue Yonder. Calling it now.

Re-watched on Britbox on 30th August 2023 as the conclusion of Hartnellthon, a marathon of early-to-mid 1960s Doctor Who
There is more emotion and heartfelt drama at watching William Hartnell break down in tears about leaving the role as the Doctor than anything in all eight episodes of series 7B and The Time of the Doctor combined.
Mark Gatiss’ peak contribution to Doctor Who as far as anyone is aware, surpassing even his VNA Nightshade from ‘92; an achingly nostalgic and beautiful piece of television that’s driven with such emotional poignancy and love in a way only rivalled by Moffat’s eventual anniversary story. Even if you haven’t seen a single episode of the show, it’s just as effective and heartwarming…

"I don't want to go..." - William Hartnell
There is always a thin line that meta-movies have to tread, and when dealing with the origins of Britain's most beloved TV show on the eve of its 50th anniversary, the line is even thinner. However, in the capable hands of the consistently-reliable Mark Gatiss, Whovians and movie-lovers needn't have feared, as An Adventure in Space and Time is a success. Combining nostalgia, wit, warmth and a surprisingly emotional sucker punch, this is an origins story worth watching.
With hefty weight on his shoulders, David Bradley excels as William Hartnell, the man who was responsible for giving the first face to the icon we know and love today as Matt Smith. A…

Well well, that was the most beautiful fitting tribute to the show I have loved all my life (even and most fervently, the frustratingly dark period of the 90s when I was a teen and it was deeply unfashionable and not even on the bloody tele!) , the 50th anniversary, and most importantly to William Hartnell.
I am not ashamed to admit I was misty eyed several times.
I absolutely loved this; David Bradley and Jessica Raine in particular played a blinder, with Raine far more flirty and fun here than she could ever be in Call The Midwife. And if Bradley isn't in the running for a BAFTA next year for this, then there's no justice.
I loved all…

10 million viewers, for your bug eyed monsters.
Possibly the easiest 5 stars I’ve ever given. An Adventure in Space and Time stands as a one of the best docu-dramas I’ve ever watched. David Bradley captures William Hartnell’s mannerisms and expressions perfectly and honestly it’s one drama that’ll make you cry by the end.
We’ve made a decision Bill...

i'm crying as doctor who is my favourite franchise in the world but also, absolute lmao over how the current insane legal troubles over the first serial meaning that the re-airing of this had them just mute and cut around moments where they re-create said serial. it wouldn't be a doctor who anniversary without some insanely funny bullshit <3
also ncuti appearing in the re-edit omg !!! he looks so hot!! but it's so funny that he sensually winks at william hartnell as if to say "hey granddaddy, the future is in safe hands" but knowing hartnell's real life politics about anyone not white - oof. he oozes sex appeal so i can't tell if he meant it to be…
